Jay begins desensitizing the horse to the lariat -
the very thing he used to add pressure to the horse. He approaches
her with the lariat, allowing her to sniff it. Jay proceeds slowly
and gradually and, whenever necessary, he backs away to take the
pressure off. He examines the filly to determine if she is overly
sensitive anywhere. By working under the umbrella of emotional control
the horse is allowed to think. Jay gradually increases the exposure
level. Jay explains that it is all about trust. He reminds us that the horse
could run off at any moment and that there is no rope holding her to him:
it is only the connection between Jay and the horse. This section concludes
with Jay applying gradual pressure to the horse's head in preparation for
the introduction of the bridle.
